Back in the 1990s

Hello! I’m Fatima, I’m from Brazil, I was born in Recife and now I’m living in San Jose, California, where I’m studying English. While I’m here learning a new language, I listen to more bands from here, because my focus is training my listening and vocabulary. I’m here to share my playlist with 5 songs that take me back in time, in the 2000s, when I was in high school. An interesting fact is most of these songs were launched in the 90s, but they were still famous in the 2000s. Let’s check them out! I hope you enjoy this trip back in time with me!

Song 1:

Always”  by Jon Bon Jovi. The year was 1994. I first heard this song when I was in school, with some girlfriends. It reminds me of when my besties and the time when we had to meet twice per month after school at someone’s house to do homework. So then, after homework, we enjoyed our cassette tapes and Bon Jovi posters.

We loved the chorus: And I will love you baby always /  And I'll be there forever and a day always / I'll be there till the stars don't shine/ Till the heavens burst and the words don't rhyme / And I know when I die you'll be on my mind / And I'll love you always

Song 2:

Adocica” by Beto Barbosa. This song is from Brazil and it was launched in 1999. Remembering this song, puts me in a good and happy mood. My mom always asked me to dance this song in all family events. At that moment the dance was so popular: it was called “lambada”, so I had to always dance with my cousins. I recommend everyone to watch “lambada” and try it with friends.

I loved this part of the song Bate feliz o meu coração quando vê você / Bate feliz o meu coração quando vê você / Bate feliz o meu coração quando, oi! I just love this song because I remember this moment with my cousins. If we translate this line of the song into English, it’s going to be, “Happy my heart beats when he sees you / Happy my heart beats when he sees you”.

Song 3:

Maracatu Atomico” by Nacao Zumbi. This is another song from my country, but now it is even more special, because it is from my city. It was released around 1996. I remember listening to this song with my aunt. This band Nacao Zumbi was so popular in Brazil and Europe. They are from my city and that makes me so proud. They started a movement called “Manguebeat”, a cultural movement created in 1991 in the city of Recife in Northeast Brazil in reaction to the cultural and economic stagnation of the city. I would like to invite everyone to listen to this music and this band!

Song 4:

Remembering this song brought laughter to my day. The name of this song is “Vogue”, by Madonna, and it is from the 1990s. She was inspired by vogue dancers. Lyrically, the song is about enjoying oneself on the dance floor no matter who one is. That was exactly what me and my girlfriends performed as Madonna.

I love the entire music, but in special this part: All you need is your own imagination / So use it, that's what it's for (That's what it's for) / Go inside for your finest inspiration / Your dreams will open the door (Open up the door) / It makes no difference if you're black or white / If you're a boy or a girl / If the music's pumping, it will give you new life / You're a superstar / Yes, that's what you are, you know it. I recommend this song to everyone who loves to dance.

Song 5:

The name of this song is “Listen to Your Heart,” by Roxette. This song was one that I learned quickly, maybe because the lyrics are kind of easy and Roxette has clear pronunciation, so it helps me get better at understanding each word. Here are some lines from this song that I really like, Listen to your heart when he's calling for you / Listen to your heart, there's nothing else you can do / I don't know where you're going and I don't know why / But listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye. I recommend it to everyone who likes old-fashioned Pop rock.

I hope these songs took you back in time to remember 5 top songs from Madonna, Jon Bon Jovi, Beto Barbosa, Nacao Zumbi and Roxette. In this playlist, I wanted to share songs from Brazil and the United States" .
